Innovation challenge to design device to better detect wearer’s location

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) and Singapore Space and Technology Limited, a private space-technology company, have organised an innovation challenge to encourage tertiary students to develop wearable location tracking solutions that can track the location of individuals with dementia or special needs more accurately.
Current satellite technology such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) have a margin of error of up to 10 metres. It is hoped that through the GNSS Innovation Challenge, launched on 25 February 2021, this margin of error is reduced.
SLA Acting Chief Executive Simon Ong said that with Singapore’s increasing greying population, the development of such solutions would assist with caring for the elderly or those with special needs. “This challenge is intended to engage young minds to overcome limitations in the development of wearable solutions to solve real-life problems to benefit the community. Through this initiative, we also hope to build interest in the use of satellite positioning reference technology to power real-time, high precision positioning applications,” Mr Ong said.
